‘Bling bling’ is a term that is very famous among rappers and people engaged in a lot of hip-hop. It is supposed to be a slang term that is used in reference to the jewelry rappers wear, the highly decorated cell phones they carry with themselves and even the ornamental tooth-caps they have. The words ‘bling bling’ are used so refer to the light that bounces off the heavily studded jewelry they wear. When bling bling jewelry first came into existence, they were usually used by the highly affluent and filthy rich rappers for whom money was not an object. All the jewelry that they would wear would we made of gold, diamond and even platinum. Since light would get heavily reflected from the shiny and sparkling jewelry worn by them, they are referred to as ‘bling bling’. Another name for bling bling jewelry is hip hop jewelry. They are called so because they were worn for the first time by people who would idolize the hip hop culture. This culture became quite a hit during the 90’s and has continued ever since. Previously, only a handful of people would be able to afford the jewelry as they would be made of expensive material like gold and diamonds. They would cost thousands of dollars and only the rich and affluent people could be seen wearing them. They are also known as ‘iced out jewelry’ because stones would cover almost the entire part of the jewelry and would look like ice particles. Another reason they were called ‘iced out’ was because it was surprising to see so many people being able to afford them, and people around thought they were as cheap as ice cubes! But with time, as many more people started to join the cult of hip hop, it became impossible for most of them to afford such expensive jewelry. Thus, came in the replicas and cheap duplicates. Jewelry that would previously cost almost as much as a thousand dollars started becoming available at not more than a hundred dollars – because of the imitation that was used. Artificial diamonds were widely used and most of the jewelry started becoming gold plated.

Thus, it was easily affordable by the big fan following the hip hop culture had.

The hip hop culture was introduced to the world a long time ago and this concept has been picked up by many over the years. Hip hop jewelry has now become quite famous and the younger generation all over the world has become quite addicted to them! There are many forms of hip hop jewelry available starting from chunky pendants, bracelets, badges, watches and even tooth caps. There are many online websites which sell hip hop jewelry for all the classes of people who want to buy them. There are original diamond studded ones for the very rich and imitations for the lower-middle class people. Many celebrities now flaunt them and they have become a style symbol for the present generation. Thus, bling bling and hip hop jewelry have become very cheap and affordable and they come in different shapes and designs. Roadside shops have also started making a business for themselves by selling such chunky jewelry. Not just youngsters, but people of all ages have started to like them!
